Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to salty air, chlorine, sulfur, humidity, perspiration, cosmetics, household bleach and other strong chemicals.
This reaction dulls or discolors the metal, but fortunately, the corrosion doesn't harm the underlying sterling and can be cleaned by polishing.

Your polishing cloth (4 1/2" x 8") will quickly develop black marks from the cleaning process, which is to be expected. Once your cloth is completely black it needs to be replaced as these cloths won't continue to remove tarnish after they've been washed.
