The Grave of Chief Ne-Kah-Wah-She-Tun-Kah
Anna Marie Jefferson has an associate degree in American History and Liberal Arts degree from Tulsa Community College and a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts from Rogers State University. She's Osage, Pawnee, Sac and Fox. Her late father's lineage is the Butlers of Grayhorse, Osage Co., who descend from Joseph Pawnee- No-Pah-She. Her mother's family is from Pawhuska, Osage Co., Oklahoma.
Chief Ne-Kah-Wah-She-Tun-Kah's gravesite is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The non-fiction account of his life (1839/40-1923) does its best to present a picture of lifelong servitude to his People as he balanced their needs with the wants of the dominant culture. His leadership was one of the factors for the historic recognition. Another consideration was his burial, which was considered to be the last of a particular type of ceremony.
While traveling Osage County, Oklahoma, the Chief's story is one of many in the area's rich and exciting history.
